I considered writing something else in this blog post — anything except what’s on everyone’s mind these days. It can be overwhelming listening to the barrage of news, statistics, and commentary about the virus that has spread across the globe.
Right now, however, any other subject feels trivial. We’ve been upended by a small bit of chemistry too tiny to be seen. We are fighting a faceless, unseen enemy intent on destroying us. I’ve read too many science fiction novels where this story doesn’t end well for humanity.
Fortunately, we’re not living in a fictional world. As I write this, the news is gloomy, but like most people, I’m optimistic that we will eventually overcome the pandemic.
Uplifting stories of bravery and common decency abound during times such as this. It’s one of the most endearing qualities of human nature. I find it heartening to see the resolve and courage of our medical providers and first responders who risk their lives to care for others. The people who keep grocery stores open and those working at essential services are doing their part, as are all of us by following social distancing.
The events taking place in the world today remind me that I began writing fiction so that others (along with myself) could find solace in characters who overcome insurmountable obstacles and conquer their fears. I write about adventures unlike anything in my own life.
Being swept away to another time and place is a powerful elixir to today’s stress and troubles. Curling up with a good book is a way to escape the vagaries of everyday life.
I love reading; I always have. It’s a way to transport yourself to another place and time. Maybe that’s what we all need at this moment.
Please support your local independent bookstores during times like this. Most have likely closed to in-store shopping, but hopefully, they have an option to purchase books online.
