Writing During a Turbulent Year

This has been a strange year and, in many ways, a difficult one. Anyone who has written a novel understands how events in the world can detract from the focus needed to craft a story. I felt the need to check news feeds more often during the past twelve months. Throw a U.S. presidential election into the mix, and the impulse can become obsessive.

Somehow during this turbulent year, my next book developed nicely. The storyline gradually took a life of its own, and the characters came alive. Nothing is more exhilarating to an author than knowing a story works and evokes a passionate response from readers.

It’s a magical feeling, believe me.

Here’s a passage from my next book, Elthea’s Paradox, which provides a glimpse into one of the book’s conflicts.

Preview of the forthcoming Elthea’s Paradox

Alan licked his lips. “The Bots may seem like the devil to you, but they were once alive. They existed just like you and me, not as they are now. They have both the light and the dark within them. Bring the good part back into their souls.”

I began to think he was mad. Was I foolish, believing he could offer anything of value? “Can’t you understand? They have my friends. I don’t give a damn about any of this crap.”

His head slumped, and he looked down at his feet. For a second, I thought he was going to either cry or turn and walk away. Instead, he slowly lifted his head and looked me in the eye. His face hardened. “Remember this: we’re perched on the edge of a blade. One direction brings something astonishing. The other leads to a horrible future for all humans. Like it or not, I fear it all comes down to the choices you will make.”

I hope you enjoyed this brief look into my next novel. Elthea’s Paradox is scheduled for release in January 2021. It will be available in paperback, hardcover, and ebook wherever you purchase your books.

Until next time, stay safe.
