Not that long ago, artificial intelligence was a topic limited to science fiction novels and movies. That is no longer the case. AI is here, it will change many aspects of our lives, and it’s not going away.
AI systems are generally more intelligent than humans and are already beginning to change our society in many ways.
Experts with more knowledge about the subject are debating AI’s positive and negative ramifications–something we all should pay close attention to. AI has the potential to transform society by improving human creativity. However, it also comes with a serious risk of misuse and societal disruptions that could have dire consequences.
I’m staying in my lane on this topic and will limit my comments to the evolution now taking place in storytelling and writing, specifically in the book industry.
Here are two small examples of how AI will change your reading experience. First, in AI-generated artwork (the images you see on covers that help you select books), AI created the above picture based solely on my prompts using the site: NightCafe Studio, which bills itself as Art via Algorithm. Second, the following article was entirely written by AI, including the title, using Chat GPT by OpenAI.

The power of AI writing in the publishing industry cannot be overstated. With its ability to generate compelling and engaging stories quickly, publishers can produce content at an unprecedented rate. This is particularly important in an industry where freshness and novelty are key to success.
AI has the power to break the boundaries of imagination in fiction writing. It can generate new ideas, explore different themes, and push the limits of storytelling. By using AI to explore the unknown, we can create stories that are innovative and thought-provoking.
As AI writing continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see a greater collaboration between humans and machines. This collaboration has the potential to produce truly groundbreaking literature that pushes the boundaries of what is possible. By analyzing data and patterns from existing stories, AI can identify areas where new stories can be told and help writers to generate fresh ideas.
Now you might think, “Well, too bad for you, John. It appears AI will replace authors and other writers as well.”
Some individuals will likely misuse this new tool by delivering books written entirely by AI. We will always have those who seek to make a quick buck without investing in the work.
I, however, believe that AI will make storytelling even richer. Successful AI-assisted authors are already using AI to elevate their writing, much like they used a thesaurus to help them in the past.
Writers like myself enjoy the art of writing. It’s why we do it. We wrestle with words and plots until they tell the story we desire. Good writers will never want a machine to spit out finished stories for them. But we do want tools that will help us make our writing better.
Readers will always seek authors whose stories speak to their tastes. An author’s brand draws you to their next book. That’s true of my books or your other favorite authors. AI will not change that.
